Pomerene

Amish Services

Pomerene Hospital is located in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country. Amish patients make up nearly 50% of our customers, and we see more Amish  patients than any other hospital in the world. With our unique customer focus, we provide a three-bedroom furnished “Amish House” on our premises.

Amish families who come from afar to seek medical treatment may stay at the “Amish House” to be near their loved ones, and Amish patients with an early morning surgical procedure where transportation may be difficult can also use the “Amish House.” As an organization, we take pride in our culture and provide every employee with cultural training so that great care is given to every patient, every time.

You can trust our team to provide care such as:

About Our Amish Community

The Tri-County area, consisting of Holmes, Wayne, and Tuscarawas County, is home to the largest Anabaptist (Amish and Mennonite) population in the world where approximately 40,000 Amish residents have made their home. The Holmes County Chamber of Commerce states that 49% of the Holmes County population consists of Amish. The Amish population believes strongly in helping each other and their community as they are generally reserved, modest, and humble. Amish also have a strong belief that tradition is valued over change and preservation eclipses progress. The common language of the Amish population is Pennsylvania Dutch.

Our Amish Advocate

Laura Schlabach

Over ten years ago, Pomerene Hospital recognized a need for someone who could understand the culture and help meet the needs of the Amish population. In February 2008, Laura Schlabach joined Pomerene Hospital as the Amish Advocate. An integral part of Pomerene Hospital's relationship with the Anabaptist community, she works closely with Amish patients and visitors to provide a comfortable and positive healthcare experience. Laura speaks Pennsylvania- Dutch and puts in a lot of time, going above and beyond her normal duties, visiting with the families at the hospital as well as their homes.

As part of Pomerene's Amish Services Program, the Amish Advocate is always ready to assist our Amish patients. Laura can assist with billing questions and serves as a liaison in all areas of patient care. She can be reached Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Amish Nurse Navigator

Julia Klink, BSN, RN

A nurse navigator is someone who can be a single point of contact for patients and families to create a more efficient care delivery to help improve patient outcomes. They work to eliminate barriers and cultural disparities to increase the health literacy of a patient and their family.

Julia has been a part of the Pomerene family for over 20 years, speaks fluent Pennsylvania-Dutch, loves to serve the community in which she also lives and spends countless hours with her patients and their families, whether at Pomerene Hospital, an outside facility or in their homes. She utilizes her clinical expertise to provide personalized care and eliminate barriers by communicating and collaborating with the interdisciplinary health care team to empower patients and families to understand their plan of care and make the best possible decisions related to their care. Both our Amish Advocate and Nurse Navigator work closely together to provide the best possible service to our Anabaptist community.
