A Parathyroid Scan localizes an adenoma either in the thyroid bed, lower neck, or mediastinum area.
What to Expect
- The patient is given an injection of a small amount of radioactive tracer through a vein in the hand or arm.
- After 20 minutes of circulation time, 4 pictures will be taken.
- Afterward, the patient will wait about 1 hour and 4 more pictures will be taken.
- This test may take up to 2-1/2 to 4 hours. The patient can leave in between imaging times for this test.
