Pomerene Hospital is among 20% of hospitals nationwide to receive a 4-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
CMS unveiled its updated Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings in late July.
"When individuals and their families need to make important decisions about healthcare, they seek a reliable way to understand the best choice for themselves or their loved ones," CMS Center for Clinical Standards and Quality Director Kate Goodrich, MD, said regarding the data release.
"Today, we are updating the star ratings on the Hospital Compare website to help millions of patients and their families learn about the quality of hospitals, compare facilities in their area side-by-side, and ask important questions about care quality when visiting a hospital or other healthcare provider."
Goodrich said the new Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating methodology takes 64 existing quality measures already reported on the Hospital Compare website and summarizes them into a unified rating of one to five stars.
Quality measures that are considered include routine care the average individual receives, such as care received when being treated for a heart attacks and pneumonia, to quality measures that focus on hospital-acquired infections, such as catheter associated urinary tract infections.
Of the nearly 4,599 hospitals that were graded:
“We were very happy to see our 4-star rating,” stated Tony Snyder, CEO of Pomerene Hospital. “When we looked at all of the hospitals within a 50 mile radius of us, the highest rating was a 4-star, and only 3 hospitals carried that score. We are pleased to be one of the three. Of course, we will continue to strive for a 5-star rating and work on areas of improvement but we are very pleased with our rating which shows that we provide excellent care to our patients.
