Pomerene Earns Disease-Specific Certification for Acute Stroke Ready Hospital From CIHQ

05-Sep-2019

Pomerene Hospital has earned the Disease-Specific Certification for Acute Stroke Ready Hospital from the Center for Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ). The certification recognizes hospitals equipped to treat stroke patients with timely, evidence-based care prior to transferring them to a primary comprehensive stroke center.

The Acute Stroke Ready Hospital certification is intended to help focus on the gaps in access to acute stroke services, while improving the assessment, delivery and care for patients.

Pomerene Hospital underwent a rigorous onsite review in June to assess compliance with certification requirements, which included:

  • A dedicated, stroke-focused program
  • Staffing by qualified medical professionals that are trained in stroke care
  • Collaboration with local EMS agencies
  • 24/7 ability to perform rapid diagnostic and laboratory testing
  • Ability to administer intravenous clot-busting medications to eligible patients
  • Availability of telemedicine technology.

Pomerene was the first hospital in Northeast Ohio approximately 7 years ago to implement the Telestroke program they still have functioning today. Pomerene provides 24-hour emergency stroke services and has a system in place to rapidly mobilize our stroke team to diagnose and treat strokes quickly. Without losing critical time, a stroke patient can be examined via secure computer and video link to the on call neurologist any time of the day or night. Through this telemedicine approach, we can begin treatment immediately, facilitating the best possible outcome and recovery.

“When a patient has a life threatening condition, they want to know that they are secure and in the right hands. The people in our community can feel that structured care plan right away with the stroke program at Pomerene. They immediately find comfort in knowing that we are able to eliminate the distance factor and effectively care for them right here at home” says Dr. Reisinger, Pomerene Emergency Physicians Medical Director. “We are saving lives.”

“We are thrilled to received Acute Stroke Ready Certification. This recognition demonstrates our commitment to providing a higher standard of service to stroke patients in Holmes County.” Fran Lauriha, CNO Pomerene Hospital.

The certification is awarded for a two-year time period. Stroke is the fifth cause of death and leading cause of death in the United States according to the American Heart Association. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes.

Common stroke warning signs and symptoms include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg-especially on one side of the body, sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or coordination, and sudden severe headache with no known cause. If you or someone else experiences any of these symptoms call 9-1-1.
