Mask Usage Policy for Patients and Visitors

In order to provide a greater degree of protection against the spread of COVID-19 to patients, staff, and the community, Pomerene is implementing additional mask usage for patients and visitors until further notice. Effective Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at 12:01 a.m., patients and visitors (non-employees) will be required to wear masks while at Pomerene facilities based on the following criteria:

A.Patient use of masks

1. Asymptomatic patient due to potential of shedding of the virus prior to symptoms

  • Recommended mask: cloth mask

2. Symptomatic patient

  • Recommended mask: surgical/procedural mask
  • Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure. People with these symptoms or combination of symptoms may have COVID-19:
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Or at least 2 of the following symptoms:
      • Fever
      • Chills
      • Repeated shaking with chills
      • Muscle pain
      • Headache
      • Sore throat
      • New loss of taste or smell

3. Exceptions to the face covering requirement may be made for special populations (Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children younger than 2 years of age, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the cover without assistance.) 

4. Patients will not be given N-95 masks, these are reserved for healthcare providers

B.Visitor use of masks

1.CMS and CIHQ expect facilities to adhere to CDC recommendations. Accredited hospitals are requiring ALL visitors to wear a mask or facial covering while within any Pomerene facility.

2.Visitors will be provided a cloth mask, if they do not have one, to wear within the facility at all times.

3.Visitors must comply with wearing the mask while in the facility. Non-compliance can result in loss of visitation privilege.

All visitor restrictions will remain in place as established on April 6, 2020.
