Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI is an advanced, state-of-the-art diagnostic test which produces images of the body without the use of x-rays. MRI uses a powerful, but harmless,
magnetic field and radio waves to produce the images. Our MRI unit is a 1.5 Tesla Siemens Espree.
What to Expect
- Your exam will take approximately 20-40 minutes, depending on the exam.
- You will be asked a series of questions concerning your surgical and occupational background.
- You may need to wear a gown and all metallic objects will have to be removed.
- MRI scans can be done without contrast or with/without contrast, depending on your diagnosis.
- You will lie on the table and headsets are available if you want them.
- Your test will be interpreted by a board certified radiologist.
- The results of your test will be faxed to your ordering physician.
Preparation
- There is no prep for MRI exams except for MRCP exams.
- MRCP prep does not allow you to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to the test.
MRI Testing
MRI Brain
- This exam will typically be scanned as ordered from your physician.
- The exam will be done with and without contrast if for a mass/tumor, infections, Multiple Sclerosis, IAC's, or for pituitary.
MRA/ MVA Brain
- This exam is always scanned without contrast
MRI Breasts
- This exam is typically scanned with and without contrast and scanned between days 7-12 of the menstrual cycle.
MRI Spines: Cervical-Thoracic-Lumbar
- This exam is typically scanned without contrast.
- This exam will be scanned with and without typically if it is for a mass, infections, Multiple Sclerosis, or prior surgery on that area.
MRI Extremities
- This exam is typically scanned without contrast.
- This exam will be scanned with and without typically if it is for a mass, tumor, or infections.
MRA Carotids
- This exam is typically scanned with and without contrast.
MRI Abdomen
- This exam is typically scanned with and without contrast.
- This exam is typically scanned without contrast for adrenals and MRCP.
Patient Checklist for MRI
Prior to your exam, review the following checklist:
- Bring any previous x-rays taken at another center to the exam.
- Continue to take any medication you normally take.
- You CANNOT have and MRI scan if you have:
- Certain cerebral aneurysm clips
- Certain heart valves
- Cochlear implants
- Metal filings in the eye
- Certain pacemakers or defibrillators - You will be asked a series of questions prior to your exam and preliminary x-rays may be taken.
- If you may be claustrophobic, ask your provider to prescribe medication prior to the exam. If you do receive medication, bring someone with you to drive you home.
