Pomerene Hospital To Collaborate with Akron General to Offer Telemedicine Program
6/18/2012
(MILLERSBURG, OH) May 24, 2012 - Beginning June 2012, Pomerene Hospital will be collaborating with Akron General Medical Center to provide telemedicine capabilities, specifically telestroke and neurology services.
With the telestroke and neurology program, physicians from Akron General can examine patients at Pomerene, via telecommunications, to help diagnose the patient's ailment and recommend a plan of care.
Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged via electronic communications for the health and education of the patient or healthcare provider and for the purpose of improving patient care. It includes consultative, diagnostic, and treatment services, and provides cutting edge resources for patients. In many cases, it allows the patient to stay home and recoup from their illness, rather than be transferred to a larger hospital.
“We saw a great need for this service in Holmes County,” stated Tony Snyder, CEO of Pomerene Hospital. “Strokes are the third leading cause of death in our area. Our patients are our top priority. Since stroke is a great health concern for Holmes County and with the excellent reputation of Akron General, deciding to collaborate with Akron General to provide this service made perfect sense to us.”
In today’s age, telemedicine is needed for several reasons, some which include physician shortages, increased access and demand, and the delivery system’s reduction in cost and increase in efficiency.
